Cleaning Mold on Karuta Cards

During an occasional cleanup, I found my Karuta set and noticed mold growth on a few cards that I previously used for shoots. A bit of googling gave a few recommendations:

  • Pencil Erasers
  • Hydrogen Peroxide

Bought peroxide from a nearby supermarket and tried a few things.

Eraser/Blu Tack helped a bit for dense bits.

Rubbing with QTips + peroxide is a no-no. It damages the paper.

Dabbing the Qtip soaked with peroxide was the way to go. Once the affected parts are moist/wet, the card can be set aside to dry. Around three sessions of dab and dry seem to be enough to deem the stains to be ignorable.

After the cleaning sessions, I now store the Uta-garuta set with Color-changing desiccants I mentioned in a previous post.
