Upon introduction, the dot INFO domains were affordable, so I got one having lost my dot COM some years earlier. Having changed owners/lessors, the price hike became alarming. From $13 to $22 then $33. The registrars just reflect the cost, here’s a post on reddit regarding the prices.
Here’s an overview from google ai:
The registry operator for the .info top-level domain (TLD) is currently Identity Digital, which acquired the original manager, Afilias, in 2020. link
Afilias was the organization responsible for managing and operating the .info gTLD from its launch in 2001, under a contract with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). The registry operator (sometimes colloquially referred to as the “lessor” since domain names are leased, not permanently owned) maintains the master database of all domain names registered within that TLD and generates the zone files that direct internet traffic. link
With Black Friday approaching, I went browsing for a new domain. I thought of candidates like:
- brymac.top
- bmac.top
- brymac.cc
- bryma.cc
TOP was discounted. but with trauma from the INFO surge, I opted not to. Also there’s yaoi connotation for it somehow (top vs bottom). CC is historically affordable, but because of that it’s been abused by spammers.
ORG a bit out of my box, but pricing should be on par with COMs/NETs. I wanted brymac96, but it’s too on the nose with my username/emails so that’s a no-no. Opted for BM96.ORG as it is really short and still retains a lot of my identifiers. I can simply add BRYMAC as a subdomain and redirect it to the main site.
So that’s it. Here’s hoping that I’ve found my forever e-home.
